What are some safety factors to consider when cleaning a gun?

Gun Cleaning Safety

The most important factor in any gun cleaning is safety. This means checking and double-checking to be sure that the firearm is unloaded just prior to getting started. This can't be over-emphasized, and it should be the very first thing that is done prior to beginning any work on the gun. The check should be performed by the person who will be cleaning it, so that they are absolutely certain the gun does not have any ammunition inside. This is true of shotguns, rifles, handguns and all other firearms.

Another safety factor to consider is how to handle children around the cleaning of firearms. Some people feel that a gun cleaning can be a good opportunity to educate kids about gun safety and handling. Keep in mind that they should not touch the gun or any of the products during a cleaning. Instead, you may want to talk with them about the reasons that you clean a gun and the importance of safe handling. Others may not feel comfortable having their children around their guns at all. If you have kids, you will need to decide what is best for your particular situation.
