What features should I look for in a shooting jacket?

Choosing a Shooting Jacket

What factors should you consider when choosing a shooting jacket? There are several to think about, so you are sure to make a purchase you will be happy with in the end. Ask yourself some questions to narrow things down, such as:

  • In which season will I be using the jacket? If you are an outdoor hunter that enjoys fall and winter expeditions, you may want to select a jacket with a zip-out lining so you can customize it to suit the weather. If you typically shoot in nicer weather, look for something that will protect you from the brush but that will not be too warm.
  • Do I need camouflage? The season you typically shoot in will help you decide what type of camouflage you may need.
  • Does the jacket impede my movement? Make sure you are comfortable in any jacket you will be wearing. Can you raise your arms easily to shoot? Bulk may keep you warm, but if you are not able to maneuver, it doesn't make much of a difference.
  • Does the jacket have enough storage? If not, you can always add a pack or vest, but it is nice to have handy pockets and compartments as well.
