Firearms manufacturers make semiautomatic rifles, but they also make a smaller and lighter version known as carbines. Carbines are shorter than a conventional rifle and have less firepower. They often fire the same ammunition, but the velocities are ranges are lower. The advantage of carbines for an active shooter is that they are well-suited for getting in and out of vehicles and are easier to handle. Their size makes them good for shooting in heavily wooded areas where hunting may require quick decisions about placement, cover and other considerations while stalking game. Carbines by design are light and mobile, qualities that make them attractive for hunters who need to stay on their toes when it's time to move toward a target or relocate to better shooting positions.
